i have a question
would any of the 2013s recommend working during first year
i know we our schedules are pretty busy compared to other students
so i was wondering if anyone had any input to this

Personally, I don't think you'll have enough time to work during your first year. So I wouldn't recommend it. That's my opinion!

I don't think any of us 2013's worked during first year - I'd recommend you do the same! You'll really want to focus on your school work, and we already have busy schedules, so you need time to just relax, do things for fun, and sleep of course. Save work for the summer and for upper years.

Nobody really worked, but you can do residence sign-ins and get paid to do that on thurs/fri/saturday. I think you are paid by the hour, and you probably wont work more than 1 or 2 nights a week, but its something. I didn't do it but I know Solomon Barkley did, if you want to ask him for more specifics.

One thing is, it goes pretty late (till like 2-3 in the morning). But it gives you an opportunity to see everybody coming in and out of res (getting to know people) and when its not too busy, gives you time to do some homework. Also, it can take away from fri/thurs/sat night fun if you are into partying .

You do become pretty good friends with the other people doing it as well.

Just putting the idea out there, in case you are interested in a lil extra cash.

Working at first year university is always tough -- no matter what program --, because there is definitely an adjustment phase... but don't be too discouraged. I have friends who were able to work, not in iSci specifically, but in other demanding programs.

You can definitely make it work it in iSci, and i'm considering working part-time myself during second year. Though, I would only recommend it if working is necessary for your financial situation, or if the work experience is important to you.

You will likely have to sacrifice time for volunteering, time for studying, time for clubs, time for partying, etc... but there is, no question, enough free time available to work if you're willing to sacrifice some of those things.

There are lots of jobs, not only on campus, but off campus in Westdale, Dundas area, etc, that are used to accepting students, and are often flexible with times, I would look into the options for sure if you are interested, something might be able to suit your schedule.

Two students from isci last year (I being one of them) worked as guest registration staff throughout the year. Basically, you work about one night a week (more if you want) signing people into residence buildings until 3:00 am. It's not a lot of money, but it definitely helped. Schedules for this position are pretty flexible, so you can definitely work it around school. I don't know about anyone getting a "real" job with isci, but a number of students managed to volunteer in the Westdale community, so it would easily be possible.
